Devon has got many pubs around its beautiful rambling country side. I have only managed to visit a handful of them and on these pages I would like to tell you about my favourites. Each one has got its own individual personallity and characteristics, from historic to modern. The oldest has got to be 'The Bridge Inn' at Topsham in Exeter which can be traced back to the Domesday Book, although 'The Hole in the Wall' in Torquay goes back to the 1500s, mind your head when walking around inside. The fine city of Exeter holdes a gem of a pub owned by the Hop Back Brewery, my favourite brewery in fact. It is 'The First & Last', quite a modern pub but with character and of cause, excellant ales. Moving on to Teignmouth, 'The Gem of Devon', my favourite holiday town. There are two pubs in this small sleepy fishing town which I really like, each one for its own individuallity. 'The Ship Inn' is a nice querky old fashioned pub with a great range of real ales and fantastic food. If it is a quick pint before going back to the hotel you are after then 'The Brass Monkey' is the place. A 'Locals' pub with good ale and soft music from the 60s. |
